Steph gets raw and real about toxic diet culture

We’ve been Kic’ing toxic diet culture in the butt for nearly a decade.

But first, let’s rewind the clock to 2013. A time when social media was flooded with ‘before and afters’, and magazine covers were slapped with body shaming stories. It’s no wonder that Laura and I fell into the toxic trap of diet culture that totally warped our perception of what ‘healthy’ looked like.

Thinking back, it makes me really sad. We were made to believe that our weight determined our worth. Our days were consumed by excessive exercise and our minds were obsessing over what we ate. At the time, we were striving to be our healthiest. But in reality, our health, confidence and happiness were at an all-time low.

Redefining our relationship with food and exercise

After years of toxic conditioning, unlearning diet culture was tricky. But we were determined to overcome this all-encompassing obstacle that social media served to us on a silver platter.

We learnt to look at food as fuel for both energy and for the soul – to be consumed and celebrated for how it makes us feel and never restricted because society says so. We learnt that the mental health benefits of moving our bodies far outweighed the physical. Choosing to focus on the smile, not the scales.

We no longer saw exercise as a punishment but as a privilege. We switched our mindset and redefined what healthy living meant to us. We are endlessly grateful that we CAN move our bodies and never feeling like we HAVE to exercise because of what we ate, or to fit a ‘trending’ body mould.

Then, in 2015 something really beautiful happened. Kic was born. We have since grown and empowered the most incredible community of like-minded humans to rebuild their relationship with food & exercise, feel confident in their own skin and live a life that is balanced, active and sustainable.

However, if I’m being totally honest, I’d be lying if I said those negative thought patterns don’t show up every now and again – we’re human, and that toxic voice loves finding ways to rear its ugly head. But now, we’re armed with the tools to Kic’ it to the curb.

Diet Culture in 2024

As a society, we’ve come a long way in 10 years, but we still have miles to go. According to the Butterfly Foundation, over 1 million Australians are currently living with an eating disorder. A heart-shattering figure, fuelled by toxic diet culture.

We’re living with comparison at our fingers tips, and the constant pressure to keep up with trends. We’ve become savvy, forcing the toxic diet culture to disguise itself as ‘wellness’. The scary thing is, for innocent eyes, it’s the start of a slippery slope that I know too well.

And don’t even get me started on the societal pressures that new mums face. We’ve literally grown, birthed, fed and kept our babies alive, yet when we’re at our most vulnerable, ‘bounce-back’ culture has conditioned us to believe that our INCREDIBLE bodies are not good enough.

Why we’re anti-diet culture

Laura and I have redefined our relationship with food and exercise, and through Kic, we’ve made it our mission to help you do the same.

For nearly a decade we’ve been saying ‘NO’ to fad diets, quick fixes, weigh-ins and transformation photos. Kic is the anti-diet culture club. We’ve built a global community of people who are sick of society telling us what we should look like.

We don’t believe in rules or restrictions. We’re all about helping you find movement and meals that make you feel GOOD.
